What is IMO 2020 sulphur limit?

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has ruled that from 1 January 2020, the limit for sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships operating outside of the designated emission control areas will be reduced to 0.50% m/m (mass by mass), from the current 3.50% m/m.

How Portland Bunkers UK have adapted to the New Regulation

Portland Bunkers UK (PBUK) have previously operated two tanks dedicated to High Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO) and two tanks dedicated to Marine Gasoil (MGO).

Following the new regulations, the demand for Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (LSFO) is set to increase and the demand for HSFO is likely to decrease. There is an uncertainty of how much HSFO will be needed after 1 January, to supply vessels fitted with scrubbers.

Under our client Monjasa’s instructions we have now stripped and cleaned both our HSFO tanks and have received the first shipment of LSFO into the Terminal.

Tank cleaning was a simple task because the fuels are similar. The remaining HSFO in the shore tank was superheated and then loaded to a tanker at our fuel berth.

The pipelines and tanks were then flushed with MGO this ensured maximum removal of any remaining HSFO, eliminating any chance of contamination.

Our client Monjasa

Monjasa continue to supply HSFO in all Ports and have now successfully completed multiple bunker supplies to customer ships of the new grade LSFO via their own tankers at Portland, throughout the UK and to Northern France.
